Istilah Islam Liberal untuk pertama kalinya diperkenalkan pada tahun 1950-an oleh Asaf Ali Asghar Fyzee (1899-1981), seorang intelektual Muslim-India. Ia menyatakan: We need not bother about nomenclature, but if some name has to be given to it, let us call it ‘Liberal Islam’.
